Whole home audio and wireless speaker specialists, Sonos, and retail giants, Ikea, have this week announced an upcoming collaboration aimed at creating ‘future home sound experiences’. Believed to involve the production of a new line of Sonos products, the collaboration is set to begin bearing fruit in 2019.
According to Ikea, the upcoming collaboration represents the third step in their ongoing Ikea Home Smart Initiative. That initiative represents the retailer’s attempts to establish themselves within the smart home technology space and has already seen them integrate Qi wireless charging into its furniture back in 2015 and launch smart lighting products in 2016.
Speaking about this newly announced collaboration, Bjorn Block of Ikea’s Smart Home Division offered a little more insight:
‘Together with Sonos we want to democratize music and sound in the home, and we want to create products designed for how people listen together at home. By teaming up with Sonos we want to combine IKEA home furnishing knowledge with Sonos’ expertise within great home sound.’
The exact nature of the upcoming Sonos and Ikea collaboration, therefore, is still very much open to interpretation. Some industry commentators, however, have latched onto the fact that ‘sound’ rather than just ‘music’ has been given top billing. There is speculation, as such, that any new range of Sonos and Ikea products may involve speakers able to act as an electronic doorbell, an intercom system, or as a mechanism to deliver chimes alerting you to the end of the laundry cycle or other similar devices.
